Disabilities Information for Parents
Sex education for young people with disabilities forum factsheet

Sex and relationship education (SRE) is an important part of the curriculum for all young people, and young disabled people are no exception. However, disabled children and young people are less likely to receive sex education in school and at home. In addition, their experiences are often excluded or misre p resented in the media (where other children pick up information) and in SRE re s o u rces. Education needs to address these inequalities. This factsheet will support staff in special schools and other settings in developing and reviewing SRE policy and practice for disabled children. It is in a question and answer format using questions commonly asked of the Sex Education Forum. It was written by David Stewart, Head teacher of the award winning Shepherd School in Nottingham and Caroline Ray of the Sex Education Forum.
